Legacy, Values, and Wellness (When a Founder Leaves)

As The Philippine STAR celebrates its 40th anniversary, the story of Cold Storage founder Mariano Qua reminds us that the greatest legacy is not merely a successful business, but the values passed from one generation to the next. A reflection on family, stewardship, and the deeper meaning of wellness.

Both Cold Storage and The Philippine Star family legacies remind us that wellness begins with the values we inherit.

In every family’s story, there comes a time when the question is no longer How did they build this?

It becomes Who will carry it next?

The founder is no longer there. The familiar footsteps disappear. The phone no longer rings with instructions. Decisions that once belonged to one person quietly become the responsibility of another. A business changes. But more importantly, a family does.

Every founder eventually leaves behind something far more valuable than a business. Some leave recipes. Some leave principles. And some leave institutions. Others leave a way of treating people that becomes the family’s compass for generations.

In many ways, that is the true inheritance, not wealth, but character.

This year, as The Philippine STAR celebrates its 40th anniversary, that thought feels especially meaningful.

For four decades, the newspaper has chronicled the nation’s triumphs and trials while remaining anchored to the ideals upon which it was founded. The people behind those pages understand that institutions endure because every generation chooses, day after day, to protect what matters.

The same truth exists far beyond the newsroom.

It lives in family businesses.

The Legacy Mariano Qua Built

Only a few months ago, the Cold Storage family mourned the passing of its founder, Mariano Qua.

Grief changes with time, but gratitude only grows. We all inherit something from those who came before us. Some receive a business. Some receive a name. The fortunate receive values strong enough to guide both. In the end, those are the legacies that nourish generations. From an Instagram post, Cold Storage President Marco Qua with his late father, Mariano Qua during happier times.

To many Filipinos, Cold Storage is synonymous with premium seafood and quality ingredients. Behind the brand stood a man who held himself to standards that extended far beyond the products he sold. Freshness mattered. Excellence mattered. Trust mattered even more.

From sourcing to packing, Cold Storage’s operations are driven by meticulous quality control, preserving the freshness and integrity of every seafood selection.

Long before Cold Storage became a household name among chefs, restaurateurs, and families, Mariano Qua understood that people were not merely buying seafood. They were placing confidence in what they served their own families.

That kind of trust takes decades to build.

And only moments to lose.

That is why his greatest accomplishment was more than creating a successful enterprise, he raised children who understood that they were inheriting a responsibility, not merely a company.

Carrying the Family Business Forward

Whenever I have spoken with Marco Qua, one thing always stands out.

He rarely speaks about himself without first speaking about his family.

He remembers his father’s lessons and honors his mother, Elizabeth, with unmistakable affection. Marco speaks generously of his siblings and of the people who helped build what Cold Storage is today. Success, in his telling, is never the achievement of one person. It is always shared.

That kind of humility cannot be manufactured for interviews. It is lived.

Some time ago, during Cold Storage’s Mother’s Day celebration, guests were treated to an extraordinary meal showcasing the company’s premium seafood and carefully sourced ingredients. Every course reflected meticulous preparation, but what lingered long after dessert was not simply the food.

It was gratitude.

Marco welcomed every mother in the room by acknowledging the recipes, sacrifices, lessons, and unwavering support that shaped not only their own family, but countless Filipino homes.

The feast became something more than a culinary showcase.

It became an act of remembrance.

Watching the family that afternoon, I found myself thinking about another family whose story has become part of Philippine history.

What Legacy Means for Wellness

Forty years ago, Betty Go-Belmonte helped establish a newspaper that would become one of the country’s most respected institutions. When she passed away, the question was no longer whether The STAR would survive.

Some legacies are written in history. Others are lived each day. Betty Go-Belmonte’s vision continues through the stewardship of her son, Miguel G. Belmonte, and the generations who uphold The Philippine STAR’s mission.

The question became whether someone could faithfully carry its soul.

Miguel G. Belmonte did. Without trying to become his mother. But by making sure her values never disappeared.

Today, under his stewardship, and the people who continue that mission every day, The STAR remains committed to the ideals that have guided it from the beginning: credibility, integrity, and public service.

The Philippine STAR printing press, the heartbeat behind four decades of trusted journalism, where every printed page reflects a continuing commitment to truth, public service, and the stories that shape the nation.

Different industries.

Different callings.

One family nourishes the nation through food.

Another through journalism.

Yet both remind us that the most enduring legacies are sustained by people willing to place duty above recognition.

That is why this story belongs in Joyful Wellness

A New Chapter for Joyful Wellness

When people hear the word wellness, they often think of nutrition plans, exercise routines, laboratory results, or the latest scientific discoveries.

Those matter.

But wellness is also deeply human.

It is the emotional security of knowing where you came from.

It is the quiet confidence that comes from parents who taught integrity before ambition.

And it is gratitude expressed not only through words, but through the work we choose to do every day.

Research increasingly tells us that strong family bonds, purpose, and a sense of belonging contribute profoundly to emotional well-being and resilience. We become healthier by eating better, but more so, by living with meaning.

Perhaps that explains why Joyful Wellness has found its home within the pages of The Philippine STAR.

Born as a digital platform devoted to science-backed health, preventive care, nutrition, movement, and mental well-being, it now begins another chapter in print. Like every young dream, it hopes to grow, not only in reach, but in purpose.

Because wellness deserves thoughtful conversations.

It deserves stories that nourish the heart as much as the body.

As The Philippine STAR celebrates forty years, and as Joyful Wellness begins writing its own story within these pages, there is reason to believe that the future belongs to institutions that never lose sight of the people who came before them.

Businesses will evolve. Technology will change. Markets will rise and fall.

But humility never goes out of style. Neither does gratitude.

In the end, the finest measure of a life is not what we build while we are here. It is whether those who come after us consider it a privilege—not a burden—to carry it forward.

That may be the healthiest legacy of all.
