An Evening Fifty Years in the Making
Anniversaries mark the passage of time, and then tell the story of a people.
On the evening of June 18, Metropolitan Medical Center College of Arts, Science and Technology (MMC CAST) formally launched its Golden Jubilee celebration with a Gala Night that was as much a homecoming as it was a milestone. Beneath the glow of shimmering lights, generations of Metronistas gathered to celebrate the longevity of a school and the enduring spirit of a community that has quietly shaped healthcare professionals for half a century.

The evening unfolded with warmth and reverence. Guests arrived dressed for the occasion, greeted by a thoughtfully decorated venue where black and gold balloons framed the stage and tables. The atmosphere was festive yet nostalgic. Old colleagues embraced. Former faculty members and administrators reunited. Alumni exchanged stories with mentors that seemed to erase the years between them.
As voices rose in unison during the singing of the National Anthem, the invocation, and the MMC CAST Hymn, a sense of shared history filled the room. The choir’s harmonious performance added a poignant note to the celebration, reminding everyone present that institutions are ultimately built by people bound together by a common purpose.

The Gala Night marked the official opening of MMC CAST’s year-long 50th Founding Anniversary celebration anchored on the theme, “50 Years Strong: Building Pathways to Global Horizons.”
Born From a Need
Long before it became MMC CAST, the institution began in June 1976 as the Metropolitan Hospital School of Nursing in response to a growing need for well-trained, compassionate nurses. What began as an institution created to strengthen the hospital’s healthcare workforce would, over the decades, evolve into a center of learning that has educated generations of healthcare professionals serving both the Philippines and the world. For decades, the school focused solely on nursing, producing graduates who would go on to serve both locally and internationally. As healthcare demands evolved, so did the institution.

Programs were added. New disciplines emerged. Eventually, in 2009, the institution transitioned into MMC CAST, reflecting a broader academic identity while maintaining its roots in healthcare education.
Yet one principle remained remarkably consistent throughout five decades: growth was never pursued for its own sake. It was pursued in response to genuine needs.
That philosophy continues to define the institution today.
The Metronista Way
Every institution develops a culture. Few can articulate it as clearly as MMC CAST.
During the anniversary celebration, Vice President for Academic Affairs Napoleon R. Caballero reminded guests that at the heart of every Metronista are the institution’s four core values: “Discipline, Integrity, Compassion, and Excellence.

Those words, found in handbooks, become values embedded in the professionals MMC CAST has produced for nearly fifty years.
Those values resonated throughout the evening.
They were reflected in the stories shared by former educators who dedicated years of service to the institution. They were visible in the pride of alumni who have carried the school’s name into hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and healthcare institutions around the world. And they were evident in the students who now stand ready to continue that legacy.
The People Behind the Institution
Institutions are often measured by programs, facilities, and achievements. But anniversaries have a way of revealing a different truth.
Schools endure because of people.
The Gala Night brought together individuals who collectively shaped the institution across five decades.
One of the most moving aspects of the celebration was the presence of pioneers who helped shape the institution during its earliest years. Among the guests was the school’s first Dean of Nursing, Jovencia P. Creus, whose quiet presence served as a powerful reminder that behind every institution’s success are individuals whose contributions often remain unwritten but never forgotten.

Moments like these gave the evening its emotional weight.
For many in attendance, the Gala meant more than commemorating an anniversary. Beyond the festivities and formalities, the evening served as a tribute to founders, generations of educators, administrators, employees, students, and alumni whose collective efforts transformed a modest nursing school into a respected institution in health sciences education.
Helping steward the institution’s present chapter is Associate Professor Michael P. Gabilo, Vice President for Administration, whose own journey reflects MMC CAST’s culture of servant leadership. A healthcare professional and an educator by vocation, Gabilo joined the institution in 2013 and continues to teach even while carrying administrative responsibilities. “If you limit yourself to the administrative side,” he reflected during our conversation, “how are you going to understand what’s going on?” It is a philosophy that keeps leadership grounded in the realities of the classroom, allowing decisions to be shaped not only by policy but also by the everyday experiences of students and faculty.

He recalls the pandemic as one of the institution’s most challenging periods. Like many schools across the country, MMC CAST was forced to rapidly transition to online learning while ensuring educational continuity for future healthcare professionals.
Yet the experience also reinforced an important lesson. Education, much like healthcare itself, must continuously adapt.
Today, MMC CAST President Engr. Joel T. Go’s vision for the institution forms part of the continuing narrative of leadership that has carried MMC CAST into its Golden Jubilee. The school continues to explore new ways of teaching, learning, and supporting students while remaining grounded in the human connections that define healthcare professions.

Beyond the Classroom
The evening also highlighted achievements that continue to define MMC CAST today.
Recent licensure examination results underscore the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, with outstanding performances across its healthcare programs. The school has consistently produced graduates who excel in professional licensure examinations, reflecting the quality of its academic instruction, clinical training, and faculty expertise.

Such achievements are particularly significant in a healthcare landscape that continues to demand highly skilled, ethical, and compassionate professionals. For nearly five decades, MMC CAST has contributed to this mission by preparing graduates who serve not only in the Philippines but also in healthcare institutions across the globe.
Yet the institution’s impact extends beyond examination results and professional credentials.
Throughout its history, MMC CAST has remained committed to community engagement, health education, outreach initiatives, and service-oriented learning. These efforts reflect a broader understanding of healthcare, one that extends farther than hospitals and clinics. It is equally about prevention, education, and social responsibility.
In this way, MMC CAST’s influence continues to ripple outward through every life touched by its graduates.

Looking Toward the Horizon
Fittingly, the Golden Jubilee celebration itself began with prayer. Earlier that day, the MMC CAST community gathered for a Holy Mass, giving thanks for five decades of blessings, guidance, and service. It was a reminder that within the institutional accomplishments lies a deeper sense of purpose rooted in faith, gratitude, and stewardship.
As the evening progressed, another milestone was unveiled: the official launch of the institution’s 50th anniversary logo, which will serve as the symbol of MMC CAST’s year-long celebration. The occasion also marked the launch of initiatives honoring the institution’s legacy, including the recognition of outstanding Metronista alumni and individuals whose contributions helped build the foundation upon which the school stands today.
Together, these tributes reinforced a simple truth: institutions thrive for fifty years because generations of people choose, day after day, to invest their time, talents, and hearts in a shared vision.
The Next Chapter
As the celebration drew to a close, guests lingered a little longer. Conversations continued. Memories resurfaced. New photographs were taken alongside old friends. For a few hours, the past and present occupied the same room.

The theme of the anniversary speaks of building pathways to global horizons, but somewhere along the spaces that night, the evening revealed something equally important.
Before any institution can look confidently toward the future, it must first honor the people who carried it there.
Fifty years after its founding, MMC CAST stands as a testament to resilience, service, and the transformative power of education. It remains a community shaped by discipline, integrity, compassion, and excellence—values that have guided generations of Metronistas and will continue to illuminate the path ahead.
The Golden Jubilee may have officially begun on a June evening filled with music, gratitude, and celebration. That evening, five decades ceased to feel like history. They felt like a conversation between those who built the institution and those now entrusted to carry it forward. Its true significance lies in something far greater: a legacy still being written, and a future still waiting to be shaped by the generations yet to come.
