Forty years ago, The Philippine STAR was born as an eight-page newspaper with no advertisements, modest in size, but unwavering in purpose. Its founders believed that truth mattered enough to build a newspaper around it, even when the odds were uncertain. That conviction has carried The STAR through four extraordinary decades.

Today, we inhabit a very different world.

News no longer arrives with the man on the bike. It flashes across our phones by the second. We are surrounded by information, yet certainty has become increasingly elusive. Misinformation spreads with astonishing speed. Artificial intelligence can fabricate images, voices, and even memories. Opinion often masquerades as fact. In an age where everyone can publish, credibility has become one of the rarest commodities.

That is why institutions like The Philippine STAR matter more than ever.

A newspaper’s greatest asset has never been its presses, its website, or its technology. It is the trust it earns, story after story, year after year. Trust is built through careful reporting, diligent editing, difficult conversations, and the courage to publish what is true.

The Invisible Custodians of Credibility

As we celebrate the STAR’s 40th anniversary under the theme “Where Truth Shines,” my thoughts are drawn to the names history remembers and also to the countless men and women whose names rarely appear in print.

Along with editors who scrutinize every sentence, with reporters who continue asking difficult questions, with photographers who preserve moments that words cannot capture, there are artists, page designers, printers, circulation teams, advertising staff, production crews, drivers, security personnel, accountants, maintenance personnel, and employees who quietly show up each day, believing that their work contributes to something larger than themselves.

They are the invisible custodians of credibility.

For forty years, they have weathered political change, economic uncertainty, technological disruption, the pandemic, and the profound transformation of journalism itself. Yet every edition, whether on paper or on screen, remains a testament to thousands of unseen acts of professionalism and integrity.

The Philippine Star and Joyful Wellness

That enduring spirit is also what gives birth to new ideas. Even in an era when many questioned the future of newspapers, The Philippine STAR chose not merely to preserve print, but to nurture it. The launch of Joyful Wellness, its newest print section dedicated to helping Filipinos live healthier, fuller, and more intentional lives, is proof that meaningful journalism continues to evolve. It is an affirmation that print still has the power to educate, inspire, and build communities around subjects that truly matter.

More than a milestone, this anniversary affirms the resilience of an idea that continues to find new ways to serve its readers. Every generation leaves its own imprint on The Philippine STAR. For ours, that chapter is Joyful Wellness, a section born from the belief that journalism chronicles life as it can also help people live it better.

Because wellness begins with informed choices. And informed choices begin with information people can trust.

As someone who has witnessed these decades unfold, I find comfort in knowing that while platforms will evolve and technology will continue to change, certain values should never become obsolete.

Truth. Integrity. Credibility.

They have guided The Philippine STAR for forty years.

May they continue to illuminate the path ahead with the stories they tell, through new chapters like Joyful Wellness, reminding us that caring for a nation’s well-being begins with caring for the truth.
