Yet before reaching for another deodorant or stronger soap, it may be worth asking a different question: Why does our scent change in the first place?

The answer has less to do with cleanliness than most people imagine.

Body odor is part of a sophisticated biological process involving our skin, our sweat glands, the microorganisms that naturally live on our bodies, and the countless ways our bodies respond to everyday life. Coffee and alcohol may increase perspiration in some people, making body odor more noticeable without necessarily changing its chemistry.

Medications deserve attention as well. Certain antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and treatments that affect hormone levels may increase sweating or subtly alter the composition of perspiration. These changes are often temporary and harmless, though they can be surprising if they appear suddenly.

Even emotional stress has its own biological signature. During moments of anxiety, the body activates apocrine sweat glands concentrated in the underarms and groin. This protein-rich sweat provides more nutrients for skin bacteria, often producing a stronger odor than perspiration generated simply by heat or exercise.

Because body odor is influenced by so many factors, the healthiest approach is rarely the most aggressive one.

Dermatologists increasingly encourage routines that support the skin’s natural barrier rather than repeatedly stripping it. Gentle cleansing once or twice daily, changing out of damp clothing after exercise, wearing breathable fabrics such as cotton or moisture-wicking materials, and allowing shoes to dry completely between uses remain among the simplest and most effective habits for staying fresh.

Hydration also deserves attention. While drinking more water will not eliminate body odor, adequate hydration supports healthy sweating and helps the body regulate temperature more efficiently. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats likewise supports overall skin health, even if no single food can dramatically change the way we smell.

Witch hazel may also reduce surface moisture and temporarily limit bacterial growth because of its natural astringent properties. Choosing alcohol-free formulations helps reduce the risk of skin irritation, particularly for people with sensitive skin.

These simple approaches are not replacements for good hygiene or medical care. Instead, they offer gentle ways of working with the body’s natural biology rather than against it.

When Body Odor Becomes a Health Clue

Most changes in body odor are harmless, but there are occasions when the body deserves closer attention.

A sudden or persistent change in personal scent without an obvious explanation should be discussed with a healthcare professional, especially if it is accompanied by fever, unexplained weight loss, excessive sweating, fatigue, or other concerning symptoms. Certain medical conditions—including diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, skin infections, and rare metabolic disorders—can occasionally alter body odor. These situations are uncommon, yet they remind us that the body sometimes communicates quietly before other symptoms appear.
